A Scripture for Bikers

Honda CH250

It is always good to memorize scripture, and here is a good one:

Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. — Jude 1:24-25

“For to one is given by the Spirit … divers kinds of tongues” – 1st Corinthians 13:8a, 10d

This gift has always been a little controversial so the apostle Paul goes into great detail in later in his letter.

Tongues is the prophetic utterance in a human or angelic 1 language unknown by the speaker 2 and sometimes the hearers.

Not engaging the speaker’s language, it doesn’t affect the speakers thinking unless it is interpreted2 – so what is its purpose?

Paul lists several, but primarily as a tool to strengthen the participant’s inner man.3

Originating from the speaker’s human spirit (inner man) it is a direct prayer link between the speaker and God4 unhindered by the person’s preferences and paradigms.

We dare not discount the importance of that; how and what we think affects our spiritual growth! If everything must be filtered through our thought processes much won’t make it through!

This is so important Jesus’ own brother wrote

“But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost keep yourselves in the love of God” – Jude 1:20-21a

Who can have this gift? As a manifestation of the Holy Spirit all in Christ have the equal access, as any spiritual gift.

We are admonished to seek the “best” gifts.5 Which is best? The one you need at the time, of course!

Do you need to be built up in your faith and kept in the love of God?

Put on the whole armour of God … Praying always … and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; and for me” – Ephesians 6:13,18-19a

Standing strong in Christ means being alert and watching – but watching for what?

1) First, we watch for Christ’s return. Jesus said he would return at an unknown hour to take his followers home and judge the ungodly. There won’t be time to say, “Wait, give me a moment!” He warns not to procrastinate.

“Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” – Matthew 24:42

2) We need to be alert for those trying to lead us astray. Sadly, some have not followed that admonition.

“For there are certain men crept in unawares, … ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. – Jude 1:4

3) And we are to watch for opportunities to serve Christ. Jesus said, “Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing (Matthew 24:46). That means doing as much good as we can while we can, to whom ever we can.

As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. – Galatians 6:10
