Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude? And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes … And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children. — Matthew 16:33

Many don’t know this was the second time Jesus fed a multitude — the first was reported two chapters earlier.

So similar are the two that some think they were the same event. Not so, the timeline and details are different. What is the same is the disciples first reaction — “What?!”, they said both times, “Where are we going to get the food?!”

We stand amazed at those forgetful, faithless disciples — ’till we realize we do the same thing. No?

What is our first response to another danger or need? How often are we in disarray even after God just took care of our last crisis?

God can do again what he did before. We didn’t become too old, too sinful, or too anything to prevent God’s grace in Christ.

I’ve been carrying you on my back from the day you were born, And I’ll keep on carrying you when you’re old … I’ve done it and will keep on doing it, carrying you on my back, saving you.” — Isaiah 45:4 (Message Bible)

“Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house … and I will make of thee a great nation …” – Genesis 12:1-3

My affiliation with Christ enables me to participate in “Abraham’s Blessing”.1

Part of that blessing is nation building – not a political nation, but a common bond of heart and soul that will culminate upon Christ’s return to rule this earth.

Jesus told his disciples, “I will build my church”.2 The word, “Church” literally means “the called out ones.” Called out of every nation and ethnic group are individuals who are to be part of his work in the earth. The call is generic in that anyone can participate if they desire to do so. It is specific in that only the ones tapped by God will say, “Yes!” Do you feel that draw to participate? It’s him calling.

These are, collectively, the “Mountain that filled the whole earth” mentioned in the Bible’s book of Daniel, chapter two.3 They are the temple of God building for his habitation.4 They are the “joints and ligaments” of the Body of Christ, helping it to grow into full maturity.5

Entering Christ has made me part of something bigger than myself, bigger than my nation, bigger than my time in history.

How cool is that!

“The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.” – Matthew 16:1

Jesus was asked for a sign from heaven proving He was the Savior. He told his audience they had the signs all around them if they would only use their brain and an observant eye.

“He told them, “You have a saying that goes,

‘Red sky at night, sailor’s delight;
red sky at morning, sailors take warning.’

You find it easy enough to forecast the weather—why can’t you read the signs of the times?” – Matthew 16:3b (Message)

Waiting for a sign isn’t an issue, but an excuse. An open mind, an observant eye, and a desire to see the truth are all that are really needed.

God can work with that!
