“…also in the midst of the garden … the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” – Genesis 2:9

My mother-in-law decided to quit smoking and did it!

Mom Frazer - 1978 Cumberland Falls, KY

I thought her method was strange and I’m not sure I can recommend it to all but I understand it, now — she kept a pack of cigarettes on the shelf where she could always see it and remember she quit by intent not opportunity.

Why does God allow temptation? Why not remove bad things and bad people where they can no longer influence, no longer corrupt?

It may have something to do with God wanting us to live by intentions, on purpose — choosing to do right rather than just not having the opportunity to do wrong.

Sound Bite: Living by intent is true freedom!
Prayer: Father, help me to live for You because I choose to do so, not just because I don’t have opportunity to do otherwise. Amen.

And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. – Genesis 2:18

God gave the “Good” pronouncement on everything he created except one – Adam’s aloneness.

Adam was good but his being alone wasn’t, so God made man into a community1 – first with a partner, then through that partner a family.

Some like being alone – no one to be hassled or disappointed with, no one to get in the way or make you wait, no one to limit your freedom or to say, “No!”; but that’s not God’s way.

God has always been a community (in his case – Father, Son, Spirit) and community is his intent for us.  He makes a place, in the Community of faith, for everyone who will accept Christ, if we will but coöperate and choose his way over our own.

God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land. – Psalm 68:6

>You always have a choice!

>

“You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.” – God (Genesis 2:16-17)

With these words the Bible says God set man on his way. But why allow temptation and the opportunity to really mess things up? Why not keep mankind, along with the the pristine world, safe and protected? Because of Love.

“Love … does not demand its own way” – 1st Corinthians 13:4a, 5b (New Living translation)

Evil tries to eliminate choice and allow only its own twisted way but God always promotes freedom and, with it, responsibility for one’s choices. That is the way God is.

“I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live” – Deuteronomy 30:19b

The first man made the wrong choice and we’ve been suffering since, but God sent the “Last Adam”1 who made the right choices and offers freedom to all who will choose him.2
