We all do some stupid (May I use the term?) things.

Thinking back over personal experience I notice a primary source; we see it in Israel’s history, too.

Israel just finished clearing out their land of idolaters then some went home and did a stupid thing — they build a rival altar. That stirred everybody up! Had they not learned God takes a dim view of idolatry?! Their answer is telling,

We have … done it for fear” – Joshua 22:24

They were afraid of being excluded later so they built a copy of God’s altar. God did not tell them to do that.

How many bone-headed ideas do we come up with because of fear over one thing or another! God tells us not to fear but trust his care, obey his word, let Him be our wisdom.

You are partners with Christ … Jesus has become our wisdom sent from God, our righteousness, our holiness, and our ransom from sin. — 1st Corinthians 1:30 (God’s Word translation)

Prayer: Jesus, help me to act in faith, trusting in your presence and care, not in fear.

Sound Bite: Perfect love casts out fear (1st John 4:18)

“and forget not all his benefits: … so that thy youth is renewed as the eagles.” – Psalms 103:2b,5b

I am old enough to have seen a lot. I’ve seen people grow old in their 30’s. I’ve seen older adults lose interest in life and start a downhill slide that others can’t stop. But I have also seen some, even in nursing homes, vibrant to the end.

Just happenstance? I don’t think so.

  • The ones I know who grew old before their time got that way through the pressures of life and their chosen lifestyle.
  • The ones loosing interest did so as one purpose for life faded after another.
  • The ones keeping their youthful outlook did it by living a daily relationship with Christ, believing his word, expecting his grace.

Everyone needs a purpose in life — the right purpose. Taking Christ as our purpose, becoming his hands and feet in this life as our goal, and experiencing his benefits keeps us involved and renewed.

Stop saying you are old. He still has important things to do through you. Start thanking God that he renews your youth like an eagle right up until it is time to go home with him.

“…also in the midst of the garden … the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” – Genesis 2:9

My mother-in-law decided to quit smoking and did it!

Mom Frazer - 1978 Cumberland Falls, KY

I thought her method was strange and I’m not sure I can recommend it to all but I understand it, now — she kept a pack of cigarettes on the shelf where she could always see it and remember she quit by intent not opportunity.

Why does God allow temptation? Why not remove bad things and bad people where they can no longer influence, no longer corrupt?

It may have something to do with God wanting us to live by intentions, on purpose — choosing to do right rather than just not having the opportunity to do wrong.

Sound Bite: Living by intent is true freedom!
Prayer: Father, help me to live for You because I choose to do so, not just because I don’t have opportunity to do otherwise. Amen.
