“Unto This Day”

“But Joshua spared Rahab … because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho—and she lives among the Israelites to this day. – Joshua 6:25”

Some biblical scholars theorize the five (5) Books of Moses and Joshua were, really, written hundreds of years later as a compilation from various ancient oral traditions (Wellhausen’s Documentary hypothesis).

One “proof” they offer is the many “unto this day” references — 28 of them in the first six (6) books of the bible.

Certainly the stories were codified after the events but Joshua 6:25 gives us a framework of how long afterwards it was — by saying Rahab was still living at the time of the writing.

Maybe we should not take some of those biblical “scholars” as seriously as they would like.

Neither

Joshua went up to [the angel] and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the LORD…” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence – Joshua 5:13-14

We start seeing life from an “Us vs. Them” perspective and when it doesn’t go well ask God, “Who’s side are you on, anyway?!

His answer is always the same, “Neither!” God is not obligated to defend our views, causes, or desires. He has his own agenda which is always right, honest, good, and true without regard to whose side it’s on.

Joshua quit asking God to be on his side and, instead, choose to be on God’s.

Sound Bite: The right question is NOT if God is on our side but if we are, really, on his.

What Kind of “Apple”?

Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye. – Proverbs 7:2

The “Apple” of the eye originally meant the central aperture we look through — it lets the light in.

Using sight as a metaphor, this Proverb is telling us to “view” things the way God’s Word filters them — to adopt his opinion on things. To do this, of course, means making a conscious effort to learn what the Bible says and taking it seriously.

Or, to use another metaphor — today’s Sound Bite: “Open minds are like open windows — you need a screen to keep the bugs out!”
