“Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe…” — John 11:14-15a (Message Bible)

Jesus made a passing comment we should not pass over.

Lazarus became sick and eventually died while his closest friend, Jesus, purposely delayed. Why? Jesus told his disciples he was glad, for their sake, he wasn’t there because he wanted them to believe — implying had he been there they would not have believed — probably because Lazarus would still have died.

The often missing part of Faith’s message is that while having it enables mountains to move and the impossible to occur, it is a gift from God. It can’t be worked up, earned by personal holiness, or manipulated for our personal desires — Jesus said,

“I’m telling you this straight. The Son can’t independently do a thing, only what he sees the Father doing. What the Father does, the Son does. — John 5:19 (Message Bible)

So when you are told if you had faith you could be healed, it may be technically true but God gives the faith, not you.

Your responsibility is to present yourself to Him, present your need and/or the needs of others, look to him for faith, and act on the faith he provides.

That’s what Jesus did.

Lifetime Calling

O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works. Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come. – Psalm 71:17-18

Discovering many strong desires turn out not so desirable, finding when all is said and done more is said than done, a new pain here, a lack of energy there, and there’s a tendency to sit out, turn inward, lose interest.

Even Solomon, wisest man ever, said in his later years,

Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.(Eccl 4:13).

But King David discovered a task and a cause that kept him going even through old age — showing God’s strength to the next generation.

Turning attention from our puny little goals to God’s plan provides an unending source of drive and energy!

As a young man I met an elderly couple (at the time I thought they were elderly but not so much now ) who inspired me. They were passing through to the mission field at age 60 — they had discovered the fountain of life, Jesus, and purposed to re-fire instead of retire.

Sound bite: Re-Fire instead of Re-Tire
Prayer: “Father, yours is a Lifetime calling — enjoying you, showing your strength and power. Thank you for that wonderful calling and grace to live it! Amen!”

Humanity’s Primary Purpose

It didn’t take long for someone to ask, “What am I doing here, anyway?!” The church decided to look through history and the scriptures and provide the answer.

In 1643 much of the church gathered in Westminster Abby and it took five (5) years but first on the list was, “What is the chief end of man?

The answer to why we were put on this earth in the first place — Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.” There it is in a nutshell!

Sure, there is work to do both now and later. Yes, there are difficulties and sorrows but they are meant to be temporary. Life gets its strength, fulfillment, and effectiveness from glorifying our Creator and enjoying him!.

“Then he [Nehemiah] said unto them [the worshipers], Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our LORD: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” — Nehemiah 8:9

Sound Bite: The Joy of the Lord is my Strength
Prayer: Jesus, show me how to enjoy you in my living, today, and bring you honor. Amen.
