“Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?” — Mark 12:14b

Three times Jesus was accused of not caring. Here, some were trying to get Jesus to make a public gaff and derail his ministry. Does Jesus uphold a hated law and reject caring or does he turn against the law and risk arrest?

The ones who really didn’t care were those trying to put Jesus into a box. They didn’t care what he thought, what was right or wrong, only what would further their cause. They were accusing Jesus of being like them.

They didn’t think Jesus cared because they didn’t care. We tend to project to God our own attitudes.

But Jesus went right to the heart — What, really, determines the ownership of anything? The image stamped upon it — what does it look like?

Who do you resemble? Who owns you? Are you stamped with your heavenly Father’s image or acting like the devil?

The good news — ownership can change!

It cost God plenty to get you out of that dead-end, empty-headed life you grew up in. He paid with Christ’s sacred blood” — 1st Peter 1:18 (MSG)

Martha was upset over all the work she had to do, so she came and said, Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself, tell her to come and help me! — Luke 10:40

Three (3) times in the New Testament Jesus was accused of not caring. One was when Jesus visited in the home of friends.

One of the hosts, Mary, just sat there listening to Jesus while her sister, Martha, was doing all the work. Where was Jesus’ sense of fairness? Maybe Jesus liked Mary more than Martha! That just wasn’t right — if everyone did what Mary was doing nothing would get done!

Sometimes we feel burdened with responsibility while others seem to go scot-free.

This story points to the real reason why we do things for Jesus. Is it because someone has to do them and everyone should have to share the burden or is because we feel called to a particular area of service, even if no one else is, and we offer our service as a sacrifice trusting God knows, cares, and will meet my needs at the right time?

Jesus “was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? — Mark 4:38

Jesus was accused of not caring three times in the New Testament.

One of those occasions was after he had spent the whole day preaching. He and the disciples were headed to the other side of a the lake when a storm started to capsize the ship.

Many of the disciples were experienced fishermen so they did what they knew best — they bailed water. But it was too much for them and they were sinking. Not Jesus, he was sleeping. They thought if he cared he would be frantic like them, after all if the ship sinks he goes with it — maybe not! Maybe he would walk away and leave them drowning.

It wasn’t that Jesus didn’t care, it was that he trusted his Father. That trust is at the heart of why this story is in the Bible. He peacefully slept while all around was in turmoil because he knew that at the right time the Father would show him what to do, even if it was strange, that it would work, and they would all be ok.

Panic never solved anything in a good way. Trust, rest, calm action when prompted — that’s what God wants us to learn through the storms.
