Heaven is Like … a Mustard Seed

Mustard

 

Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof. –Matthew 13:31-32

Jesus told parables to both illuminate and obfuscate at the same time — enlightening to those willing to listen, confusing to those without time or inclination to care.

Here, Jesus emphasizes the importance of small beginnings. God isn’t interested in starting big but in continuous growth. It may not seem like much at first, but that’s ok. Start with a little understanding, a little step of faith, a little consistent time of praying, a little Bible reading — and do it faithfully. Soon it will grow and provide shade not only for yourself but others, too.

Dried Up Rivers (or, God’s Perfect Timing)

Elijah obeyed God’s orders … And sure enough, ravens brought him his meals, both breakfast and supper, and he drank from the brook. Eventually the brook dried up because of the drought. Then God spoke to him: “Get up and go to Zarephath..” – 1st Kings 17:5-8 (The Message)

When I read bible stories I try to imagine the experience.

Here is Elijah, a prophet, camping beside a river and trusting God for his provision. But the river starts to dry up because of the drought. Elijah is smart enough to know eventually there will be no water, yet he hears nothing from God.

Did he get nervous? It doesn’t say. It does say when the water ran out God had another place for him to go and that’s what I hold on to. It may look like things are dying up, and they may, but God always has another place, another task, another opportunity.

Benefits – Crowned

“and forget not all his benefits: … who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;” – Psalm 103:2b,4b

We don’t just have God’s tender mercies and loving kindness, he wants his people to remember we are crowned with them. A crown indicates special selection.

Most people come with a natural desire to be different, special, selected. Some wear funny clothes, do strange acts, give lots of money just for the sense of uniqueness. The desire to be different is God given but it can only be satisfied in Christ.

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light” – 1st Peter 2:9

Following Christ is the only real alternate lifestyle — all other ways are just variations of this sinful world.

In Christ we have God’s favor, his loving kindness, his tender mercies — these are his benefits, don’t forget it.
