Feeling Saved

“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. – Jesus (Revelation 3:20)

More than once I have heard, “I asked Jesus into my heart but I don’t feel saved!”

I always ask two (2) questions – first, “What is being saved supposed to feel like?”, and without exception they say, “I don’t know!” Then I ask, “How do you know, then, you don’t feel saved?!”

When you ask Jesus to come into your life, that IS what feeling saved feels like, right then, at that moment! Sure, we read stories in the Bible where lights flash, people fall, holy voices speak – we like those stories, they make good theater. They are the exception rather than the rule. God seldom does theatrics but he will do what he says.

When we open life’s door to Christ we know he comes in simply because he said he would. Start with that simple fact. Feelings may come and go, but trust in God’s word stays.

Praising Without Feelings

Some think it insincere to offer praise to God without the corresponding feelings.

Anthony Bloom (1914 – 2003), Archbishop in the Orthodox Church, has good insight here.

When you live in your family, and you work out of doors and are doing a heavy kind of work, you may come back physically worn out. If at that moment your mother, your sister, your father or whoever else, said ‘Do you love me?’ you would say ‘I do.’

If the other person goes on investigating, ‘Do you really love me at this moment?’ what you could honestly have said is ‘No, I feel nothing but my aching back and worn out body.’ But you are perfectly right in saying ‘I love you’ because you know that underneath all exhaustion, there is a live current of love.

It is that way with God. For one reason or another we don’t always feel our love for him but there is, still, a live current of love.

Prayer:Father, I thank you there is a live current of love in me for you and yours, even when I don’t always feel it.

A New Set of Duds!

All of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. – Galatians 3:27 (CEB)

Our criminal history with God has been expunged,1 so why continually dredge it up in prayer? Before coming to Christ, Yes! we need to be aware we are sinners in need of redemption, but not afterwards!

Though I am a sinner in my sight2 I am not one in his! He see me redeemed, clean, and dressed in his beloved son! He begins his character changing work in me, making me more like Christ in my actions, not from guilt but gratitude.

Prayer: Father, I am grateful that though I see my failures you see your son who died for my sins and ever lives his life in and through me!

Sound Bite: I have given my life to Christ, I am redeemed, and I will not let anyone tell me different.
