“When Joseph arrived at Shechem, a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, “What are you looking for?” – Genesis 37:15

Most Bible students are familiar with the story of Joseph and the salvation of Egypt from world famine, but not many know who the most important man of that story is.

If you think it was Joseph or Pharaoh you’d be wrong! The most important person was that unnamed man who found Joseph wandering around looking for his brothers!

Had he not had the courtesy to ask “What are you looking for?” and pointed in the right direction, Joseph wouldn’t have found his brothers, wouldn’t have gone to Egypt, and wouldn’t have saved the known world from starvation.

Think about that the next time you feel insignificant. The most important people aren’t the great leaders and shakers in this world but the ones who point them in the right direction.

“And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man” – 2nd Samuel 12:17

David stopped listening to God or his conscience. He saw what he wanted and it ended with adultery and murder. Because he was king no one dared confront him – except Nathan, the prophet.

Though perhaps not with the same sin, we all have times of closing off our conscience and spiritual ears, requiring God to send someone like a Nathan.

God does it – maybe through using a spouse, a friend, your pastor, even a Police officer – but how do we handle it?! By denial, anger, and self-righteousness — or by soul searching, repentance, and kindness toward the messenger?

It doesn’t have to end badly. King David penned his response in Psalm 51. He also named one of his children, Nathan, no doubt after the man whom God used to bring him back to life.

God’s Powerful Pinkie

[T]he magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, they could not … The magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” Exodus 8:18-19a

God and Pharaoh were locked in battle over freedom for the Hebrews; the magicians, the really smart ones, finally realized it was a one sided fight.

They admitted what even God’s people sometimes forget – its not God’s power they were no match for, it was just his finger.
